When You Have a Chipped Tooth or Broken Tooth...
If you chip, break or knock out a tooth, see your dentist as soon as possible. While it may be tempting to try to go about life as usual and pretend nothing ever happened, if left untreated, your tooth might become more damaged and infected, which often results in the loss of the tooth. Once you've contacted your local dentist to schedule an appointment, read more below about how you'll be treated for your chipped or broken tooth, and what you can do while you wait for dental treatment. Don't worry, with the right dentist, you'll be on your way to restorative dental care that makes your smile as good as new.

We take into account the cause of the chipped tooth, the significance of the broken tooth, and any other relevant factors from your dental history in order to help you make the best decision for your dental health.
Common procedures to treat broken teeth include:
- Dental fillings
- Dental crowns
- Dental veneers
- Root canals
What Should I Do About My Broken Tooth?
A) First, do a search for a dentist near me, or call our office to schedule an appointment.
B) While you're waiting to go to the dental office, follow these tips to protect your mouth:
- If you’re in pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever or apply an ice pack to your cheek or lip near the broken tooth. An ice pack will also reduce any swelling to your cheek or lips.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
- Use gauze to apply pressure to anywhere that’s bleeding. If the bleeding does not stop, try applying pressure with a tea bag instead of gauze.
- If you have to eat, consume only soft foods and do not chew or bite down on your broken tooth.
- Cover any sharp edges of your tooth with temporary dental cement, wax paraffin, or sugarless chewing gum to protect the rest of your mouth from cuts. These items should be available at most drugstores.
